Creative Israel: Douze Points!

In May, Israel celebrated its Eurovision victory in Portugal. In July, a celebration of creativity continued in Tel Aviv at the international Creative Economy FSTV event organized by ACT Shenkar. The aim was to shape the future of the creative economy in Israel.

The Creative Economy FSTV international keynote speakers were both impressive and inspirational. The topics dealt with creative leadership and the future of the creative economy, as well as the boundaries between science, art and industry. We need the preconditions that make it possible to make unexpected bargains; we need playfulness, the use of creativity and the courage to produce new solutions.

Creative policy of the economy

ACT Shenkar is a creative economy center and accelerator in Shenkar College of Engineering, Design & Art. Tami Warshavski, Head of the Innovation Center ACT Shenkar, also leads an EU-funded Clever project, with partners from Denmark, England, Iceland, Estonia and the Netherlands, along with Israeli players. Tami is the wonder woman of the Israeli creative economy and under her leadership Clever has promoted Israel's creative economy policies. The work has borne fruit and the Ministry of Economy of Israel is taking on the creative economy development agenda. In Israel, they are particularly interested in the way the Nordic countries develop creative industries.

In her speech, Tami emphasized the decisive and crucial role of design, but also of other creative skills, in all sectors. The development and needs of Israel's creative economy sound familiar to us: promoting the creative know-how, how different industries find creative skills to strengthen their own business, develop statistics and finance models.

Relevant experiences. Space for coincidence, uncertainty and surprises

Roberto Verganti from Milan University of Technology spoke of disruptive innovations that cause re-definition of the market and fundamentally change the rules and the success factors of the industry. He emphasized the role of design when it comes to producing meaningful services and products and valuable experiences for people. New approach is not in solving existing problems but in finding meaningful experiences and in creating new value.

Lucy McRae, who describes herself to be a Sci-Fi Artist and a Body Architect, does not bow to limits, but encouraged in her speech a brisk, even chaotic crossing of borders, dialogue between various actors, accepting uncertainty and surprises. She believes that if companies act more like art studios and commit to adopting a creative process at the beginning of development, that may result in unexpected bargains that lead to real new innovations. Lucy's collaborators have included, among others, NASA, MIT, Philips, Unilever and Intel.

The creative leader of Sydney Google Creative Lab, Tea Uglow, (who does not call herself a director, but uses the title "Experimental Person-in-Charge"), spoke of leadership, uncertainty and the future of digital landscape. Tea works with cultural organizations and creative professionals and researches the space between technology and art: what happens when they meet and combine. My work is about dreaming big, stepping away from reality and about finding edges. According to her, by experimenting with digital tools in creative work processes, we can change the current understanding of cultural practices without losing traditions, values, and intangible features that make art worthwhile.

Compete, but in a good spirit

...And who will represent Israel in Creative Business Cup 2018? Winner was the startup company 6Degrees, which has developed user-driven wearable technology. The Finnish CBC representative Myssyfarmi brings another kind of product to the competition: the knitted products of the Myssy Grannies!
